Free walk-in haircuts for Kindergarten through Grade 12 students will be offered Aug. 27 and 28, with food bank donations encouraged at participating Straight 8 locations.

Straight 8 Barbers is giving local students a fresh start to the school year with its First Annual Back-to-School Free Haircut Day in Kamloops and Vernon. Free haircuts will be available to students from Kindergarten through Grade 12 at all four Straight 8 barber shops over two days in late August.

Straight 8 Northshore will host Free Haircut Day on Thursday, Aug. 27, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Straight 8 Valleyview, Straight 8 Aberdeen and Straight 8 Vernon will hold their events on Friday, Aug. 28, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

All four events are walk-in only, with no pre-booked appointments. Free haircuts will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis during event hours, subject to barber availability and capacity.

With the theme “Fresh Cuts. Big Smiles. Ready for School.”, the event was created as a way for Straight 8 Barbers to give back to the communities it serves while helping students head into the new school year looking fresh and feeling confident.

Straight 8 hopes the event will become an annual community tradition that families can look forward to each August.

“We see families coming through our shops every day, and we wanted to find a meaningful way to give something back,” said Fava, founder of Straight 8 Barbers. “Going back to school is a big day for kids, and sometimes a fresh haircut gives them that little extra confidence. We hope families come out, have some fun and help us make this something we can do every year.”

No purchase is necessary to participate in the Back-to-School Free Haircut Day. Eligible students can simply visit the participating Straight 8 location during event hours and check in with the team. Because appointments will not be reserved in advance, families are encouraged to arrive early and be prepared for possible wait times during busy periods.

After their haircut, students can sit in the Straight 8 race car for a back-to-school photo in front of branded event signage. A photographer will also be on site to capture photos during the event. Parents and guardians may take their own photos as well, and any photography involving children will be handled with parent or guardian permission. Families may choose to share their photos on social media and tag Straight 8, but social sharing is optional.

The Back-to-School Free Haircut Day will also support local food banks. Straight 8 is encouraging families and community members to bring a non-perishable food donation when they visit a participating shop. Donations collected at the Kamloops locations will support the Kamloops Food Bank, while donations collected at the Vernon location will support the Vernon Community Foodbank. Donations are appreciated but are not required to receive a free haircut.

Suggested donations include canned foods, pasta, rice, cereal, peanut butter, soup and other non-perishable items. Bringing a food donation is encouraged but is not required for a student to receive a free haircut.

The combination of free haircuts and food bank donations allows the event to support the community in two ways: helping students prepare for the first day of school and collecting food for families who may need additional support.
