Stein’s real-life battle to free his father from an unwanted guardianship, has unveiled its official trailer, drawing more than 11,000 views in its first week.

Inspired by the story of Stein’s father, Marvin Stein, a former Golden Gloves boxer, The Final Fight transforms one family’s extraordinary ordeal into a deeply human story about fathers and sons, aging, justice, forgiveness, and the systems meant to protect society’s most vulnerable. “At its heart, The Final Fight has always been about a father and a son,” Stein said. “What began as my fight to protect my father became a story about love, forgiveness, and what we owe the people who once protected us. During the final years of his life, Marvin Stein became the subject of a guardianship petition filed by members of his wife’s family, setting off an extraordinary battle over his freedom, dignity, and future. Long before there was a film, the events that inspired The Final Fight received national attention in New York Times journalist John Leland’s story, “The Fight of This Old Boxer’s Life Was With His Own Family.” But the greatest fight of Marvin Stein’s life wouldn’t happen inside a boxing ring. It would become the fight for his freedom, his dignity, and his relationship with his son. In 2020, Marvin said of his son: “If it wasn’t for my son, I wouldn’t be sitting here today.”

FROM A TRUE STORY TO THE SCREEN

In The Final Fight, Hollywood producer Scott Cohen returns home believing he can save his aging father, Martin Cohen, only to discover that his influence and power mean little against a system already closing in around them. At its heart, the film is about a son trying to save his father before time runs out — and discovering that their fight is about more than winning. It’s about love. Regret. The complicated bonds between parents and children. And ultimately, forgiveness.

The completed short film is designed as both a standalone work and a proof of concept for Stein’s award-winning feature screenplay, offering audiences a first glimpse into a much larger story inspired by these extraordinary true events.

AN ACCOMPLISHED NEW YORK ENSEMBLE

Josh Davis (Beautiful: The Carole King Musical on Broadway) stars as Scott Cohen, opposite Tom Hair as his father, Martin Cohen. Trini Alvarado (The Staircase) portrays journalist Paige Carson, a character loosely inspired by New York Times journalist John Leland. The cast also features Ryan Spahn (Succession, Elsbeth), James Ciccone (The Fall and Rise of Reggie Dinkins), and Maggie Reed (Only Murders in the Building, FBI: Most Wanted). The ensemble was assembled by acclaimed New York casting director Adrienne Stern. “We looked for actors who could honor the truth of the family’s experience and tell it in the most meaningful way possible,” Stern said of the casting process.

THE TEAM BEHIND THE FINAL FIGHT

Stein makes his directorial debut from his own screenplay, working with Director of Photography Leland Krane to establish the film’s visual language. Morgan Alexandra Neville shaped the final edit, while award-nominated composer Cameron Adams, a graduate of Yale University and USC’s Screen Scoring program, created the film’s original score. Mario Gutierrez designed the film’s sonic world, with Peter Waggoner completing the final mix. Veteran visual-effects artist Scott Winston and his team at Danger Pixel, whose credits include The Greatest Showman, True Detective, and Boardwalk Empire, handled visual effects. Final color grading was completed with Jake White (Obsession) through Company 3. Producer Marlene Schneider, former Vice President of the National Council on Aging, brings a unique perspective to the project, bridging filmmaking and advocacy around issues affecting older Americans and their families.

With the film completed, The Final Fight is now entering the film festival submission stage while the filmmakers begin conversations with producers, production companies, sales representatives, entertainment publicists, festival strategists, financiers, and advocacy organizations about expanding the project and bringing the feature-length story to the screen. “This film began with one father and one son,” Stein said. “We hope it speaks to every family that has faced the difficult questions of aging, dignity, control, and what we’re willing to fight for when someone we love can no longer fight alone.”
