VISTA, Calif. – Sacred Journey Recovery, a men’s addiction treatment provider in North County San Diego, has expanded its outpatient addiction care statewide. Men anywhere in California can now enroll in its virtual outpatient program for men across California, delivered fully online or in a hybrid format that combines remote sessions with in-person care in Vista. Both formats are approved by The Joint Commission for virtual delivery and follow ASAM criteria, the clinical framework California health plans use to determine level of addiction care.

Most online addiction treatment asks patients to trade in-person contact for a schedule that fits. Sacred Journey Recovery’s approach removes that trade. The virtual program is the same clinical program the organization runs in Vista, and each man decides which parts happen in person based on distance and schedule. A man in Bakersfield, Fresno, El Centro, or Redding can complete group therapy, individual therapy, case management, and medical visits over secure video. A man closer to Vista can attend groups from home during the week and meet his therapist in person, then adjust that mix as treatment progresses.

“Most online rehab is only online,” said Drew Anagnostou, founder and CEO of Sacred Journey Recovery. “A man shouldn’t have to choose between treatment that fits his life and treatment where he can sit across from his therapist. This program gives him both, and if a different mix works better by week four, he can change it.”

Virtual programming runs six to nine hours per week, with groups scheduled so participants can keep full-time jobs. Each participant meets with a medical provider by video every week for as long as he remains in the program, rather than once at intake and occasionally afterward. After this phase, men step down into continuing care with weekly group and individual sessions. Clinical work draws on cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), the same approaches used in the organization’s in-person programs in Vista. The program addresses alcohol use disorder and opioid, stimulant, and sedative use, along with the anxiety, depression, and trauma symptoms that often accompany substance use.

Virtual addiction treatment is regulated by the state where a patient is physically located during each session. Because Sacred Journey Recovery is licensed in California, it can treat men throughout the state, including in rural and inland regions where reaching in-person treatment can mean a long drive each way.

Concern about employment keeps many men from seeking help. California Labor Code Section 1025 requires private employers with 25 or more employees to reasonably accommodate an employee who voluntarily enters an alcohol or drug rehabilitation program, unless the accommodation creates an undue hardship. Section 1026 requires employers to make reasonable efforts to keep that enrollment private. The law does not require paid time off and does not protect current impairment on the job. Addiction treatment records also carry federal confidentiality protections under 42 CFR Part 2, which are stricter than HIPAA.

Sacred Journey Recovery screens every inquiry for fit and states plainly when virtual care is not appropriate. Men who need more structure than virtual care can provide may be better served by its in-person intensive outpatient program for men in Vista. Alcohol and sedative withdrawal can cause seizures and require medically supervised detox, so men in that situation are connected with detox first and can begin outpatient care afterward. Men in acute suicidal crisis are directed to the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.

“Telling a man on the first call that virtual care isn’t right for him is better than finding out in week two,” Anagnostou said. “When it is the right fit, the things that usually end treatment early, the long drive, the changed shift, the only open slot at two in the afternoon, mostly disappear.”

Enrollment begins with a confidential call, a benefits review, and a 60- to 90-minute clinical assessment with a licensed clinician using ASAM criteria, where the man and clinician choose a level of care and a virtual or hybrid format together. Most men join their first group within 48 to 72 hours. Hybrid participants attend in-person sessions at the organization’s home base for men’s addiction treatment in Vista, CA.
