HOUSTON, Texas – July 23, 2026 – As the nation observes Chronic Disease Awareness Day on July 10,Tashiba Williams, NP-C, founder of ADA Family Health Clinic, is drawing attention to a connection many Americans overlook: the direct link between unmanaged chronic disease and preventable limb loss.
Chronic Disease Awareness Day, observed annually on July 10, takes its date from the statistic that seven of the ten leading causes of death in the United States are chronic diseases. For Williams, the observance is also a reminder of a less publicized statistic: the majority of the roughly 130,000 lower limb amputations performed in the United States each year are linked to chronic conditions, primarily diabetes, and many of them are preventable.
“Chronic disease doesn’t just affect the heart or the lungs,” said Williams. “For millions of Americans, it shows up as a wound that won’t heal, and if that wound isn’t treated early and consistently, the consequences can be permanent.”
A Mobile Response to a National Problem
Williams founded ADA Family Health Clinic to address the gap between patients managing chronic disease and the consistent, specialized wound care many of them need but struggle to access. Since launching the mobile practice, Williams has treated more than 343 patients across Texas and Louisiana, including individuals who had previously been told amputation was a likely outcome.
By bringing wound care, primary care, and chronic disease management directly to patients in their homes, Williams’ clinic removes the transportation barriers, referral delays, and inconsistent follow-up that often allow chronic disease complications to progress unchecked.
“My goal is to meet patients where they are and give them a chance to heal before limb loss becomes the only option,” Williams said. “Chronic Disease Awareness Day is a chance to remind people that early, consistent care isn’t optional. It’s often the difference between keeping a limb and losing one.”
A Call for Greater Awareness
Williams is using the observance to encourage Americans managing diabetes, vascular disease, or other chronic conditions to prioritize regular checkups, monitor for early signs of wounds or skin changes, and seek specialized care immediately if a wound does not show signs of healing within two to four weeks.
“Chronic disease management isn’t a once-a-year conversation,” Williams said. “It has to be part of someone’s everyday life, and that includes paying close attention to their skin and their circulation.”
